More than 100 report to camp
Echo Sports (8/5/04)
University of Central Arkansas head coach Clint
Conque and his staff welcomed 115 Bears to fall camp Thursday on the Conway
campus.
The Bears, who open the 2004 season on Aug. 28 at Eastern New Mexico, will
have testing and physicals Friday before starting practice at 9:30 a.m.
Saturday. UCA will work once a day through next Wednesday before starting
two-a-day practices on Aug. 12.
The Bears are coming off an injury-riddled 5-6 campaign a year ago, but
Conque said spring practice and the attitude of his players this summer have
his staff encouraged about the 2004 season.
"I really like this bunch of young men," said Conque, who begins his fifth
season at UCA. "They worked extremely hard in the spring and that has
carried over to the summer workouts."
"I think everyone has come back with a healthy and fresh attitude. Those of
us in the program feel like last year was an aberration of sorts and we're
anxious to move forward."
The Bears, picked fifth in the Gulf South Conference preseason coaches' poll
released last week, return 14 starters from last yearıs team. Also returning
is senior quarterback Zak Clark, who sat out last year with a
broken finger suffered in the first week of preseason practice.
UCA has 12 seniors, including starting defensive ends Gary Davis and Chad
Taylor, and offensive guard Jason Russell. Also returning are three starting
wide receivers in senior Anthony Lampkin and juniors Michael Norvell and Ben
Faires.
"We've got an excellent group of newcomers and transfers that we look
forward to blending into our program," Conque said.
