Echo Sports (8/10/04)

The University of Central Arkansas Sugar Bears were picked third in the Gulf South Conference West Division preseason volleyball poll released Monday.
UCA senior outside hitter Pearline Gill was named to the preseason All-GSC West team by the league's coaches. Gill is a 5-foot-11 senior from Bernie, Mo.

The Sugar Bears, under the direction of head coach Kris Petersen, tied with Christian Brothers for third place in the West with 22 points. Harding University was the unanimous pick to win the West with 36 points, followed by Henderson State (29), UCA and CBU (22), Southern Arkansas (21), Ouachita Baptist (9) and Arkansas Tech (8).

Alabama-Huntsville was the choice to win the East Division, with second-place North Alabama chosen to win the GSC overall title.

UCA had two players named on the Top Newcomers list, including Conway redshirt freshman middle blocker Rachel Copley and junior outside hitter Stephanie Sloan, a transfer from Hutchinson Community College.

The Sugar Bears open the 2004 season on Aug. 27-28 at the Southern Indiana Tournament.
